This is the first post of a series answering the question, “Why should I take a HypnoBirthing class?” You can find the other reasons and their links here.
Let’s get one thing straight right now: I am not here to tell you what you should or should not do, especially when it comes to birthing your baby. Nobody can tell you that. People can make recommendations, but you are the one who ultimately makes the final choice. In fact, my telling you what you “should” do actually goes against HypnoBirthing philosophy. And that’s really the first and most important reason you would choose to take a HypnoBirthing class, because one of the fundamental tenets of HypnoBirthing is something we call “Instinctive Birth.”
Instinctive Birth is based on the conviction that YOU are the foremost expert on your body. You are the only one who has known your body since before you were born. You are the only one who knows what it feels like on a day-to-day basis and if something feels “different.” And you are the only one who is experiencing any and all sensations from moment to moment. No one else is more in touch with your body and your baby. Not your doctor, not your mom, not your friend, not the nurses. YOU. And as such, your health care provider needs to follow your lead as you follow your body’s lead. Maybe you feel that something is “off” and you or your baby need an intervention. Or perhaps you feel that what your health care provider is recommending isn’t necessary. Whatever it is you are feeling, you can trust your body and your instinct.
But what if you don’t trust your body or your instincts? Or what if your health care provider doesn’t follow your lead?
Learn to trust
Because the concept of Instinctive Birth is so central to HypnoBirthing philosophy, the curriculum centers around teaching you how to listen to your intuition and communicate your preferences. We focus on removing the ingrained fear of childbirth so that you can trust your body and its instincts. You learn how to read your body signals and how to actively send calming messages to the brain when it starts to pick up distress. We give you tools and techniques so that you can remain relaxed and tune into your intuition. One of my clients trusted her body so much that when she felt the need to squat, she did–and received her own baby moments later!
Learn to communicate
This mother had to advocate for her preferences and her right to move from the beginning; otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to squat when she felt her body telling her to. While the nurses were not pleased, she couldn’t have been happier. She and her birth companion knew what they wanted and how to advocate for it because this is a core piece of the HypnoBirthing curriculum. We go over “protocols” and “directives” that you might encounter as a birthing person. After going over advantages and disadvantages, you determine what you want and make a birth preferences sheet. That way, both you and your birth companion know beforehand to which procedures you will give your informed consent and to which ones you will not.
Once you’ve thought through your preferences, we role play various scenarios in which your preferences may possibly get forgotten or ignored. You practice how to respond to these possible situations in a respectful and assertive manner. We even provide a sheet of responses so you don’t have to think of what to say or how to say it. This gives you and your birth companion time to get comfortable with the idea of speaking up. Your handbook includes this sheet of speaking prompts and scripts so that you have it handy on the day of the birth.
So what should you do?
Honestly–whatever you and your birth companion think is best for you and your baby. It is up to you. But if you want to:
- be more in touch with your mind and body
- learn about the birthing process
- know your options
- determine your preferences
- be prepared and calm no matter what happens
…then I suggest you look into a HypnoBirthing class. But that’s all it is–just a suggestion. You decide.
